Neighborhood resource
Neighborhood tool lending policy template
Use this as a starting point for neighborhood tool sharing rules. It is written for residents and organizers who want clear expectations before people borrow drills, ladders, yard tools, trailers, or other project gear.
1. Who can participate
- Define whether participation is limited to residents, verified neighborhood members, invited households, or approved community groups.
- State that borrowers and lenders must be adults and must follow BorrowHive account and safety requirements.
- List any tool categories your community does not want shared, such as high-risk, regulated, or professional-only equipment.
2. Requests, pickup, and return
- Ask borrowers to request dates before pickup and describe the project enough for the owner to confirm the tool is a fit.
- Set expectations for pickup windows, missed pickup, return timing, and condition photos where useful.
- Keep timeline changes and rental questions in BorrowHive messages so the record stays connected to the tool.
3. Safety, damage, and disputes
- Make borrowers responsible for safe operation, protective gear, lawful use, and returning the item in the agreed condition.
- Ask owners to describe known condition issues, accessories, and basic operating expectations before handoff.
- Define how damage, loss, late returns, or unsafe behavior should be reported and escalated.
